About converting £1
£1 is the natural starting point for the pound-to-dollar rate: the headline GBP/USD number is the value of one pound in dollars. Multiply it by any pound amount to get the dollar equivalent. Throughout the modern floating era (since 1971) £1 has been worth between roughly $1.05 and $2.00, so a single pound has always bought more than a single dollar but never quite two.
